LVMAC Tidbit: NCC provides free truck driver training to veterans and their families

U.S Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) helps NCC provide free Class A CDL training programs to veterans and their families.

This August, Northampton Community College (NCC) received a $163,200 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to provide free Class A truck driving training to 40 current or former members of the United States Armed Forces, their spouses and adult children.  NCC will recruit qualified students, provide them with superior safety-focused training, support them through successful program completion, and provide placement services to assist them in becoming employed in the transportation industry. VA closes Northampton County outpatient clinic over workload caused by the pandemic

The Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center has announced it will be temporarily closing the Northampton County Clinic in the vicinity of Bangor as of 4:30 p.m. today.  It was a short notice notification.  Those seeking seeking in-person care will have to travel to the Allentown Outpatient Clinic or Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center,  both over 45 minutes away from the current location.

Their announcement stated that this was being done out of an abundance of caution related to the transmission of the COVID-19 coronavirus illness.  A little late to think of that. (more…)

LVMAC Tidbit: PA Music Society to Conduct a Virtual Memorial Day Celebration

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic causing cancellation of its original live event plans, the Pennsylvania Music Society (PAMPS) is partnering with WFMZ-TV 69, the Lehigh and Northampton County Executives, and the Lehigh Valley Military Affairs Council (LVMAC) to sponsor a special community-wide live streaming event on Memorial Day 2020 centered around the nationwide Moment of Remembrance. LVMAC Tidbit:  CSOR Veteran Survey May Improve Occupational Licensing in Pennsylvania

The Knee Center for the Study of Occupational Regulation is conducting a project with the U.S. Department of Labor which is studying the effects occupational licensing has on military veterans and military spouses.  If affected, participate now.  The survey is set to end December 2020.  [Editor’s Note: The survey may be extended as a result of the novel coronavirus pandemic, as intended outreach events have been cancelled.]

The survey, being distributed throughout the Commonwealth, asks questions about barriers of employment. The goal of the survey is to help the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania distinguish the needs of servicemen and servicewomen, and their spouses, as it pertains to occupational licensing. (more…)

LVMAC Tidbit: New Procedures at VA Cemeteries Due to Cornavirus

It was to be expected, but now it is official:

As of 20 March, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ National Cemetery Administration (NCA) will only conduct committal services for groups of 10 or fewer people.

But as of 23 March, committal services (including honors) will not be conducted until further notice.  Both of these announcements, especially the latter, will affect the rendering of military honors.  They are discontinued until further notice — including those conducted by The American Legion, VFW, etc.   The same is occurring de facto at private graveside services, and funeral homes are limiting presences at their facilities, as you might have read.
