Academics for Veterans (A’s for Vets) had approached and the CareerLink Lehigh Valley has agreed to a joint event, an Education and Employment Fair, at the CareerLink on Union Boulevard, Allentown. It will occur on 10 November 2016 between the hours of 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. It is but another unique offering from A’s for Vets — something for which it is becoming known. The result of your effort will ultimately lead to one of the premier, annual Veterans Day period events in the Lehigh Valley. This award-winning program was started over thirty years ago by a Principal and his teachers — well before the current war made appreciating our veterans popular — and has become part of the institutional culture of the school. Volunteers are needed for the Veterans Reading Brigade. The demand has been increasing and we now have too few volunteers. The concept is simple. The Lehigh Valley Military Affairs Council’s annual “Salute to the Troops” dinner will be held on 13 May, starting at 6 p.m., at a new location this year: the Holiday Inn at 7736 Adrienne Drive in Breinigsville. Our member organizations are strongly encouraged to attend, but the event is open to any member of the community wishing the recognize the service of the current military and recently returned veterans. Robin Carmody, our Chair of the Veterans Reading Brigade, is calling for veterans to step forward and volunteer to read to elementary school students during school hours and/or after-school programs in the Allentown School District (We can use volunteers for other school districts as well.). (more…)
