LVMAC Tidbit — Vietnam War Observance
A Commemoration of the Vietnam War at the State Capitol
On March 29 at 11 a.m. in Harrisburg, the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs is conducting a Vietnam War 50-year commemoration ceremony in the Rotunda of the State Capitol.
Besides the eight Vietnam-era, state legislators and a part of the National Guard establishment who will be there, the President of the Pennsylvania State Council of Vietnam Veterans, Tom Haberkorn and a color guard from VVA Chapter 542 will be in attendance.
A resolution (SR 316) will be read proclaiming March 30, 2016, as “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day” in Pennsylvania.
According to the prime sponsor of the resolution: March 29th marks the date that the last U.S. troops departed Vietnam in 1973. [It was the pullout date of the last of the combat force.] March 30th marks the date that he troops landed home. More than 304,000 service members wounded in Vietnam and approximately 75,000 were disabled. Of the 58,193 service members who lost their lives, 3,144 were from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Public debate and political crossfire, in many cases, led to the unfortunate mistreatment of many of our soldiers as they returned to the United States from Vietnam.
