NCC Offers Free Tuition for Truck Driver Training
According to a 4 March 2016 posting by Northampton Community College (NCC), a grant from the United States Department of Transportation has enabled the college to offer free commercial truck driver training to current and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their spouses (including current members of the National Guard and Reserves) who reside in Northampton, Monroe, Pike, Wayne, Carbon, or Lackawanna counties. [Editor’s Note: It is unfortunate such a course offering does not exist for Lehigh County residents.]
The grant covers the full tuition cost of $4200 per student. The only remaining cost to students is for licensing, according to their website — the permit cost (averages $83.50) and the Hazardous Material Threat Assessment ($60.00). That is a good deal, especially if the school is correct in its assertion that its driver job placement rate is ninety percent.
The training, which requires eight weeks or less, is conducted at its Monroe County campus. Day classes meet Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for six weeks. Evening classes meet Monday through Friday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for eight weeks.
