It is estimated forty-five percent of those in the armed forces are from rural areas. Surprisingly, considering its its wealth of industry and size of population, Pennsylvania has large rural tracts. About 89.5% of its area and 21.3% of its population is rural. Even in the Lehigh Valley, the third largest metropolitan area of commonwealth, there are sizeable, rural areas. These fall within the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s sphere of responsibility, and that is useful to know. (more…)
The Lehigh Valley Military Affairs Council’s annual “Salute to the Troops” dinner will be held on 13 May, starting at 6 p.m., at a new location this year: the Holiday Inn at 7736 Adrienne Drive in Breinigsville. Our member organizations are strongly encouraged to attend, but the event is open to any member of the community wishing the recognize the service of the current military and recently returned veterans. According to a 4 March 2016 posting by Northampton Community College (NCC), a grant from the United States Department of Transportation has enabled the college to offer free commercial truck driver training to current and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their spouses (including current members of the National Guard and Reserves) who reside in Northampton, Monroe, Pike, Wayne, Carbon, or Lackawanna counties. At a press conference on November 11 at Bethlehem’s City Council Chamber, President of LVMAC, Gerald Still, Retired Major General (USAF), announced the Healthcare in Our Community (HOC) alliance has remained strong and viable and has grown going into its fifth year. Still said, “The commitment of the CEOs of the participating organizations in this working alliance has been remarkable and necessary. Our sons and daughters, fathers and mothers, continue to return to an environment where there are no major military medical facilities close to home.
