LVMAC News — Join the Veterans’ Reading Brigade

Our Team Leader, Robin Carmody, is now recruiting readers for the coming school year.  It is a simple mission.  The word on the street is that this program has been well received as a pilot project.  Now we are trying to expand this program, starting with the Bethlehem School District.  The kids are are truly interested and appreciative, as are the teachers.  See flyer below for details. Forward Observer — Punishing the Higher Education System for Veterans – The Pennsylvania Way

LVMAC Poster Art 2005Effective 1 July 2015, a little mentioned section of the Veterans Access, Choice, And Accountability Act of 2014 signed into law by the President on 7 August will have huge consequences to Pennsylvania’s public institutions of higher learning.  It may well affect the well-being of about 25,000 veterans who are students and up to $300 million in state revenues from the federal government to Pennsylvania’s institutions of higher learning.

Section 702 of that law states:

 … the Secretary shall disapprove a course of education provided by a public institution of higher learning (more…)

LVMAC Tidbit — Ritter Elementary School Wants You!

Ritter Elementary SchoolRitter Elementary School at 740 N Plymouth St, Allentown, PA 18109, is again having its annual, fifth grade student’s veterans’ interview day (to be later followed by a veterans day celebration).  The interviews are Ritter Veteran Interview Day Flyer 8Oct2013projected to be conducted on October 8th.  This is one of the oldest school events involving veterans in the Lehigh Valley and has a sterling reputation among veterans from our community who have participated.  It is a tradition carried on by the teachers themselves in remembrance of our veterans and their contributions to our nation and community.  If you are interested please contact Rick Grab at 484-765-5661 or grabr@allentownsd.org. LVMAC Tidbit — Days to Remember: A Year of Films

Until June 2014, the Sigal Museum — Northampton  County Historical and Genealogical Society’s flagship facility and headquarters — sigalmuseum11is presenting a series of films which document some of the significant events related to World War II.  A local company, Reda Productions, produced the films while working with the History Channel. This series is free and open to the public and will run continuously during museum hours. (more…)

LVMAC Poster Art 2005Kerry Smith, Staff Attorney, Community Legal Services of Philadelphia, a leading advocate for low income residents in the Philadelphia area, spoke to the Council at its 20 March business meeting as a member of a coalition of over 90 organizations – including the Community Action Committee of Lehigh Valley, MOAA of Pennsylvania, the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society, the Veterans Leadership Program of Western Pennsylvania; and the Council of Churches, AFL-CIO and AARP of Pennsylvania – who have concerns about the recent lobbying to allow payday lending in Pennsylvania, which is currently illegal.
