LVMAC Tidbit: Free Peer-to-Peer Recovery Training Opportunity
Hello LVMAC friends,
I want to share news about a training we are helping to coordinate – specifically for those working with veterans who are suffering with substance use disorders. Treatment Trends is collaborating with Pennsylvania Recovery Organizations Alliance (PRO-A) to offer a Special Training Opportunity:
On Friday, November 1, 2019, “Serving Those who SERVED” training will be offered at Cetronia Ambulance Corps, 4300 Broadway, Allentown, PA 18104. (more…)

Treatment Trends Inc. has a case manager for a veterans-specific treatment track which is integrated into its in- and outpatient drug and alcohol treatment programs. LVMAC Tidbit — Treatment Trends Seeks Case Manager for Veterans
Veterans Sanctuary is dead, killed off by a lack of government-private sector cooperation, but Treatment Trends, Inc. persists in seeking ways to assist those veterans with profound drug and alcohol programs find a better life. Now it is seeking a Veterans Treatment Case Manager to aid veterans who are receiving addiction treatment in Keenan House and the Halfway Home of the Lehigh Valley in an effort to help them access community health, veterans support services, social and VA services. This part of a “veterans track” effort within the organization and has been recognized by the Office of Veterans Affairs, Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs with grant funding. LVMAC Tidbit — PTSD/Co-Occurring Disorder Vet Grant Opportunity, Short Notice
Frankly, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania seems poor in distributing word or notifying of grant opportunities in the veterans arena. As a consequence, this grant opportunity has been extended beyond its original 13 or 14 February deadline. So, we are taking the unusual step of trying to spread the word, since they have only extended the deadline to 27 February.
An extension has been given to the following grant:
The Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) is announcing the availability of up to $750,000 in competitive grants from funds appropriated for Veterans outreach and shall be used for programs providing treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and co-occurring disorders such as substance abuse for Veterans. Racing for Recovery’s™ motivational speaker, Todd Crandall, is coming to Bethlehem at the Cathedral Church of the Nativity on evening of 18 September. This may be of interest to some of our comrades or their families who have suffered the effects of alcohol/drug abuse or addiction. Using sports activity as a vehicle to recovery has taken hold of late in the current war veterans population. (more…)

Forward Observer — Veterans Sanctuary is Gone, but Something of It Remains
As most already know, Veterans Sanctuary unfortunately is no more. It ceased to be after a troubled ten months of operation last year. The building, which was the physical shell for a sophisticated therapeutic approach to treating our returning war veterans, both men and women, when they suffered from chronic addiction to drugs or alcohol and profound war-induced trauma, figuratively collapsed for lack of local county, state and federal government support – only the City of Allentown had assisted.

LVMAC News — Dr. Bhatia Speaks About the VA’s Mental Health Efforts
WILKES-BARRE VA MEDICAL CENTER SAYS IT IS PAYING MORE ATTENTION TO MENTAL HEALTH AND RECOVERY
Dr. Aruna Bhatia, Chief of Mental/Behavioral Health Services spoke to the Council at its business meeting on 19 December on the advances in care by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). In an honest and straightforward talk, she stated there has been a focus on mental health over the last decade and a lot of work done in recovery, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and suicide prevention, albeit with some stumbling along the way. LVMAC News — Assistant District Attorney Luksa Explains DA’s Veterans’ Mentor Program
LEHIGH COUNTY SEES ITS VETERANS’ MENTOR PROGRAM AS A SUCCESS
Steve Luksa, First Assistant District Attorney for Lehigh County, spoke to the Council on 20 June at its business meeting about the District Attorney’s Veterans’ Mentor Program. Other program team members present with him were: Debbie Garlicki, Executive Aide (Public Relations), DA’s Office; Brenda Trayes, Administrative Assistant, DA’s Office; Shane Schmeckenbecker, Probation Officer II; and Maureen McManus, Executive Director of Lehigh Valley Pretrial Services
According to Mr. Luksa, the one-year old, Veterans’ Mentor Program (whose motto is “Leave no veteran behind.”) started out as part of Team MISA (Mental Illness and Substance Abuse), now in its seventh year and an effort which has reduced cost and recidivism while still protecting the community. An increasing number of veterans were using the that program, but there was no way to address treating them uniquely (as he believed they should be). Hence the program was created. (more…)
