LVMAC Tidbit — Northampton County Bar Association To Hold a Special Veterans Legal Needs Forum
On 1 December 2016 at Penn State – Lehigh Valley, the Northampton County Bar Association will hold a forum entitled, “Lehigh Valley Veterans: Their Story, The Challenges and How We Can Work Together.” The event is open to the public and, for the first time in the Lehigh Valley, provides the opportunity for both veterans and the legal community to converse on this important subject.

If successful, it will raise the awareness of the local legal community as to the needs of veterans returning home and the struggles of some during their transition – the experiences of both veterans and those attorneys who represent veterans will be shared. The program will also highlight various services offered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs; and explore the court services available and not available in both Lehigh and Northampton counties.
Presenters will include Anthony Doran, a veteran involved in VetsforWarriors, a peer support program funded by the Department of Defense; Kimberly Sapolis Lacey and Karen Baer, who are part of the VA’s Veterans Justice Outreach initiative and stationed at Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center; Eric Dowdle and Michele Vollmer, who are involved with Penn State’s Law Veterans Clinic project; Stephanie Spencer, who is involved with Northampton County’s Problem-Solving Courts initiative; and Maureen McManus and Steve Luksa, who are involved in Lehigh County Veterans Monitoring programs. Victor Scomillio will serve at its moderator.
For veterans, the event is free. Indeed, they are encouraged to attend, especially if they can contribute to the discussion and help advance the point of the American Bar Association’s current President, Linda Klein, that local legal communities need to become more involved and do better by our veterans. Its Veterans Legal Services initiative (Commission) is “… a multipronged, holistic effort to mobilize lawyers to ensure veterans receive the legal assistance they deserve.” For more on this, click here.
