LVMAC Tidbit — DMVA Announces Funding Availability for 2017 Veterans Trust Fund Grants
On 19 September the Office of Veterans Affairs, Department of Miltiary and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) announced it was seeking grant applicants for 2017. Suspense for submissions is 18 November. Note that those who submit electronically have a time edge on those who submit by paper, if mailing time is considered.
Once again up to $500,000 in grants to nonprofits (defined this year as 501(c)(19) Veterans’ service organizations or 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations with a mission of serving Pennsylvania Veterans); and up to $150,000 in grants to County Directors of Veterans Affairs or the Pennsylvania Association of County Directors of Veterans Affairs.
For nonprofits, the priorities for funding are homelessness, post-traumatic stress injury (sic), behavioral health initiatives and unique veteran health services (such as equine and in-health care services) and other new and innovative programs or services which address unmet or emerging needs of veterans and their families. We are not sure if the priorities are listed in order and one could interpret them broadly enough for any nonprofit to apply — other than a 501(c)(4) [something new which eliminates the Disabled Veterans of America and a few others].
If one serves a broader community but does have something specific for veterans and their families, the statement that “… Organizations must include documentation (e.g., mission statement, charter, bylaws) with its grant application establishing that one of its primary missions is to serve Pennsylvania Veterans or their families.” should not be bothersome.
