LVMAC News: The Red Cross in the Lehigh Valley — Its Origin and Military Support Role

Published by Rich Hudzinski on

The presentation below was made by Peter Brown, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Pennsylvania Rivers Chapter on 16 November, as part of its Veterans Day observance.  The Red Cross’ presence in the valley dates back to 1917 when chapters were formed in Easton, Bethlehem, and Catasauqua in conjunction with our involvement in World War I.  It has undergone several reorganizations locally since then (there was once a Greater Lehigh Valley Chapter) but its support to the military has been one constant — now in the form of Support to the Armed Forces (SAF) program. As the briefing explains, it offers a variety of services.  It is another LVMAC member organization which goes beyond chatter to address the needs of military veterans and their families in a unique way — and, equally impressive, ninety percent of its staffing is volunteer.
