LVMAC Tidbit — Don’t Know What to Do With Your Loved One’s Funeral Flag?

Use it for a Higher Purpose at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery

The Lehigh County Veterans Affairs Office is seeking donations of interment (casket) flags to be flown on the Avenue of Flags at the entrance to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ Indiantown Gap National Cemetery located in the vicinity of Annville.  The donations of these flags has dwindled over the years and the continuous need has not been well known.

These flags traditionally fly between Memorial Day and Veterans Day.  An interment flag is specified as being  5 1/2 by 9 feet in size.  The cemetery or Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, which is supporting this effort, has placed one additional restriction beyond the flag being in good condition: the interment flags must have been previously used for a military servicemember’s or veteran’s funeral.

Any county’s Veterans Affairs Office should be a collection site for these flags, but LVMAC advises you first check.  In Lehigh County, contact the Assistant Director for Veterans Affairs,  Viola Hertzog, in the Government Center located at 17 S. The intention is to deliver the flags before Memorial Day, but the requirement should be continuous.
