LVMAC Tidbits — Time’s Running Out for the Persian Gulf Conflict Bonus!
If you have been thinking of applying, you better move quickly; if you know someone who might be entitled, inform them quickly, for the deadline to apply for Pennsylvania’s Persian Gulf War Bonus is nigh and has not been extended. The deadline is still 31 August 2015.
Passed in 2006 and fifteen years after the war, the bonus is available to Persian Gulf Conflict veterans who served on active duty during the period of 2 August 1990 to 31 August 1991, subject to the following conditions for the individual:
- Served a member of the regular components (active duty military) or reserve components (PA National Guard or Reserves) of the U.S. Armed Forces.
- Was a legal resident of Pennsylvania at the time of active duty service during the period (Home of Record counts).
- Received the Southwest Asia Service Medal (SWAM).
- Was discharged from active duty under honorable conditions, if not currently on active duty.
- Did not receive a similar bonus, gratuity, or compensation from any other state.
Survivors of eligible beneficiaries are also eligible for the award, in the following order of precedence:
- Surviving spouse
- Surviving children
- Surviving parents
The bonus pays $75 per month for qualifying, active-duty service members, up to a $525 maximum. For personnel who died through illness or injury received in the line of duty, there is an additional $5,000 available to the surviving family. Servicemembers who were declared prisoners of war may also be eligible for an additional $5,000.
