A New Program Comes to the Lehigh Valley

On 18 September, Megan McCuen, Veterans Wellness Program Coordinator, spoke to the council on the topic of “River Crossing YMCA Gives Back to Those Who Served and Their Families.”  The newly formed River Crossing is bringing to the Lehigh Valley its latest offering, a wellness program oriented on military veterans, active serving military, and their families. It is scheduled to begin at the Allentown YMCA on 23 September.

This free, twelve-week program with follow-on benefits already operating south of us in Bucks and Hunterdon (New Jersey) counties has already involved 985 individuals since 2015, an indicator of a stable, well-run, small-group program meeting a need.  Also noteworthy is that the effort is entirely funded by those who care about those who served. No government funding is involved.

The group-based program remarkably tailors itself to each participant and places emphasis on what McCuen called the three-legged stool of “movement, fuel and thoughts.”  That is, it balances physical health, good nutrition, and psychological health to achieve wellness.  In the process, an additional benefit arises, the development of connections and friendships that last — so key to a good and healthy life. “I treat them like family”, she added.

Below are the slides from the presentation.  They provide more information on what is entailed and how to sign up. McCuen stated she is available to speak to organizations associated with the military and veterans community.  Her contact information is provided at the end of the slide set.
